Call to dub climate change 'a catastrophe'

THE government should stop talking about global warming and start using the term "climate catastrophe", a leading scientist said yesterday.
Dr Richard Pike, chief executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, also called for a commitment to deliver a large-scale use of renewables and nuclear power, rather than encouraging "trivial solutions" such as washing clothes at low temperatures.

Dr Pike said global warming conjured up a gradual, gentle process in which the real problems would be dealt with decades into the future. He said teenagers need to be taught that, without action on climate change, there would be food and water shortages, floods, mass migration and possibly a billion deaths within their lifetime.

He added: "We live in a country where much of the population regards the sun and heat as welcome, so why should predictions of global warming immediately strike people as nasty and something to be avoided?"

Dr Pike said to bring about change, there needed to be dissatisfaction with the current situation, a vision for the future and clarity on short-term steps to achieve that vision – and the government had failed on all counts.

And he said tough decisions were needed on carbon capture and storage, massive deployment of renewables and prioritisation of science and funding to halve the global dependence on fossil fuels.

He added: "There has to be a picture where hydrocarbon use is globally constrained and energy provision draws massively on sustainable renewables and nuclear power stations."

When oh when are people going to realise climate change is ; normal, natural, frequent( in relation to the age of the planet) and unavoidable ?
Why do we waste billione of pounds and dollars trying to be "King Canute " and stop the unstoppable tide of climate change? Why don´t we spend the money doing what we evolved to be...adapters ? Why not spend the money on people ?
When the sky is going to fall on our heads it´s better to provida umbrellas than to try and prop it up !!

It's a catastrophe for the Royal Society of Chemistry if they have this piker as their chief executive.

Clearly Gordon hasn't ended his fascination with hoovering even more hard earned funds out of our pockets.

I just wonder how people like Pike manage to establish themselves as respected scientists with statements like "climate catastrophe". More like he's reading ahead to a year or two from now when it's quite evident that the climate may be changing but like share prices the temperature can go down as well as up. Or that as the whole GW carry-on becomes more and more discredited that research funds to promote it start drying up.

Encouraging though to see that he thinks that nuclear power figures in the equation unlike most of the eco-numpties.

The only SANE comment in this thread is from Caratacus.

There IS a "climate catastrophe" and if persons choose to ignore it then it is at their peril and that of their children and grandchildren.

#9, blethers. The climate has changed throughout history and always will.

The idle chattering classes have invented many daft scares to bore us with, but so-called climate change beats even bird flu and SARS (not to mention the 'global cooling' they came up with in the 1970s).

Can't the BBC, the Guardian and the Hampstead trendies do better than this?

Yeah, a "climate catastrophe" pretty much sums it up:

Few seem to realise that the present IPCC models predict almost unanimously that by 2040 the average summer in Europe will be as hot as the summer of 2003 when over 30,000 died from heat. By then we may cool ourselves with air conditioning and learn to live in a climate no worse than that of Baghdad now. But without extensive irrigation the plants will die and both farming and natural ecosystems will be replaced by scrub and desert. What will there be to eat? The same dire changes will affect the rest of the world and I can envisage Americans migrating into Canada and the Chinese into Siberia but there may be little food for any of them. --Dr James Lovelock's lecture to the Royal Society, 29 Oct. '07

ALL, you are all being conned into talking about climate change (which is happening, and to which the human race contribute), which is being used as an excuse to raise taxes and punish the poor, but the fact is we are going to run out of oil and gas soon (from the easily exploited deposits) prices will sky rocket, and our gov, like all the rest need to be looking at ways of making sustainable energy viable and consistent, biofuels were a mistake they at least admitted, but wave, wind, solar, biomass (waste) and nuclear should have been on the agenda, and taken seriously, 20 years ago.

Fossil fuel electricity production should have been replaced gradually over this time, if it wasn't for political and financial reasons, we could already be 20 - 30 % (yes, a guess!) there, with the background knowledge and skills to deal with the problems relating to high fuel costs at the present time and in the future.

Then I could drive my petrol car for a little bit longer.

#1,3,4,5,6,7,10,14. Well said. Computer games predict....well anything you want if you write them yourself, actually.

The DR is loopy. Unfortunately he is not alone. He is also "out of the loop". Again, unfortunately for the rest us, he is not alone.

It is getting colder. It will continue to get colder.

Where will these idiots get their funding from then?

He needs to do some research. He is not the only one with their head up realclimate's bottom it would seem.

Bring on the clowns.

"The question that must be answered is this - with ENSO accounted for, what happend to the other .18 C of temperature rise that we should be seeing for this time period."

The above uses the data from the political entity Hadley(created by margaret thatcher via sir john houghton) You should take a look at the satellite data Dr Pike.

A catastrophe? YES

I have two grown up daughters. Neither is married and neither has children! It pleases me that I don't have grand-children and I pity the bairns in prams. What an inheritance we are leaving. Climate Change is normal but unfortunately nobody was here that could write about it last time there was a big one. We are in an interglacial period. Of that there is no doubt. The Earth will heat up until natural systems eg. The Gulf Stream can't cope. Then comes the big freeze.

Surely there is also little doubt that man has unwittingly been doing his best to make things worse.

So, yes please tell children - a bit at a time as much as they can absorb, like sex education. The younger the better, like earthquake training. Teenage is too late, hormones get in the way of interlectural thought for most. At worst we could see an increase in teenage suicide.

In the mean time we should all do our best to make the energy and resources we have last as long as possible.

I'm doing my bit, even though I'm an OAP. POWERTUNE Energy Saver is something I have discovered. It plugs in and saves me up to 25% off my electricity bill.
If you would like to know more about POWERTUNE please send me a message abcox@abcox.karoo.co.uk or visit my blog http://TheEnergyLadyUK.com and www.PowertuneEnergySaver.com I'm setting up in Social Enterprise and will be pleased to help you.

# 18, when there is no oil and gas left how will people heat their homes, cook their food, my point has obviously been missed.

If fossil fuels last forever at affordable prices then fine, they wont last forever and they wont remain affordable, we should have been looking to reduce our dependence on them for some time now. No matter who's at fault our wastage of it. The fact that we will end up with cleaner air and have fossil fuels available for longer seems to have escaped the numpty brigade.

hertscot,

One more point I probably need to make, as long time member of the RSC, I think he is wrong to suggest this is a catastrophe. There are already food and water shortages, and taxing us more will not make that go away.

Thos who recognise the dangers of Accelerated Climate Chang may as well give up trying to convince the exhaust fumes addicts. They are like drug addicts and will do or say anything to maintain their habit and to ask them to think the issue through will be to no avail.

They will blame whatever happens on poor old Gordon, the Labour Government, Al Gore and anyone else who may have tried to warn them they are in fact the epitome of 'shooting the messenger' or King Canutes advisers.

They blame fuel price increases, food price increases etc on Poor Old Gordon and the arabs. They blame the Chinese the Indians for forcing up the price of commodities and then with their next breath heap praise on the market economy.

They trot out the same old phrases and hackneyed answers ignoring all the Sviews of the scientists of the IPCC and quote as their PROOF the suspect of one or two 'experts' ('eggs' something that is easily cracked and 'spurts' are big drips) who quote evidence that has been disproven many times.

I must say I have had a great deal of fun and laughter at all the comments in the Scotsman's "climate" posts.

Toeing the party line and believing anything other than your own senses and instinct is a result of too much exposure to the media which thrives on disaster, so good news dies quickly - or the need to just believe in something/anything. Stress kills. Believe in something worthwhile.

Is the weather any better, or worse, than it was when you were in school? (a question not pointed at #24 and #18 as they either still are or never went)

AGW, MMGW, Climate Change, etc is nothing more than tax and control.

Our annual 100 mile holiday journey to the beach begins today. Hope our LPG converted 15 year old estate car makes it. This year we can afford 6 days camping (down from 7 last year) and next year if this bs continues we wont be able to afford to go at all.

The weather(especially temperature) has not varied much in the last 50 years. Call it climate if you like.

I think we are heading toward something of a drastic change in climate and our planets magnetic field. It will be interesting to see how much hype the Dec. 21st 2012 date will get, which begins the Earth passage across the Milky Way's galactic Plane (Center Alignement)
