AN MSP was yesterday accused of arrogance after he put plans to bring in a 10p levy on plastic bags before Holyrood for a second time.
Liberal Democrat Mike Pringle has relaunched a member's bill that aims to introduce the charge.

But the idea was rejected by members of a Scottish Parliament committee in 2006.

And Labour MSPs accused Mr Pringle of wasting parliament's time by bringing the bill – which has not been changed – forward again. Karen Gillon hit out at the Lib Dem and said: "Your arrogance astounds me, Mike."

The proposal was being discussed by MSPs at Holyrood's rural affairs and environment committee.

At the end of their discussions MSPs voted in favour of a fresh consultation being carried out.

I dont understand the reasoning of the charge, it doesnt solve the problem. there will still be bags as litter but i suppose we can rest assured that someone made money of it.

What I stupid idea this is. Legislation on a commercial action!!! If he wanted to introduce a bill to ban plastic bags he might get some support.

Would it not be far better to encourage the supermarkets to reduce the level of bags they give out, they could levy a charge to discourage people from using them. Also they could stress the environmental damage done by using plastic bags.

I personally use a small rucksack for my shopping. I don't need plastic bags and my hands are free to hold things when I want to look at something.

Further the shops could stop issuing them. I was in a charity shop in Edinburgh on Monday and the assistant said, before she knew I already had a rucksack, that they no longer give out plastic bags. The problem is solved immediately if others follow their example.

I use the plastic bags as bin bags eventually. I would be most hacked off if I had to pay out yet more money to literally throw away.

The status quo is fine. We don't need consultations and we need new legislation even less.

If they want to address the issue of needless waste, they can start with excess packaging, which uses far more resources and generates far more waste. The politicians have got it completely wrong again. How unusual.

Hello All,

I'm old enough to remember when the Eco-Fascists complained loudly, often, and vociferously, that all markets/stores/commercial outlets, ABANDON the use of Paper Bags, in favor of the more 'Environmentally Friendly' plastic bags.

For YEARS the Eco-Fascists complained, wrote letters, stages protests, lobbied politicians, did EVERYTHING they could, to convince all and sundry, that PLASTIC BAGS were going to be the 'saviour' of all those trees that were being cut down to make paper bags (but really weren't, as paper bag production was merely an offshoot process for using the detritus from other wood production processes).

Lo and Behold, here we are again.

NOW the Eco-Fascists are playing the same tune, whining the same Whines, moaning the same Moans, and doing their fancy dances of 'Environmental Concern' for all and sundry.

They're lobbying the politicians, they're filing lawsuits, they're marching in demonstrations: in short, they're making complete a s s e s of themselves once again.

The one thing the Eco-Fascists do well, is to get the facts WRONG in so many ways and so very often: they take basic facts which are easily provable and believable, and twist them, turn them, flip them upside down and sideways, until no facts actually remain, just the innuendo they wish to purport as the truth.

Keep up the 'good work' Scotsman, I'm sure your one side reporting makes the Eco-Fascists happier than the proverbial clam.

Cheers from the Rockies

Hi Neanderthal. I seem to remember the same issue when I was younger. paper bags were not given out as they became litter. Now polly bags are going the same way. I take the point that they take longer to deteriorate, but as High Octane points out, they can be used as waste bags. Even better, buy some of the reusable bags and get extra points.
Good day from Ayr
