Published Date: 07 July 2008
TWO senior Liberal Democrat MSPs, Tavish Scott and Ross Finnie, will today announce they are to stand for the leadership of their party.
Mr Scott and Mr Finnie will join Mike Rumbles – the maverick MSP who was defeated in the last leadership contest back in 2005 – in the race to succeed Nicol Stephen, who resigned last week.

Mr Scott is the clear favourite to be elected leader and
he will concentrate on the economy in his campaign.

He will announce his candidacy from Shetland and launch it formally in Edinburgh next week.

Sources close to Mr Scott, the former transport minister, said yesterday: "People are hurting out there and Tavish wants to make this a campaign about the impact that the economy is having on people and families."

Mr Finnie, the former rural development minister, will declare his desire to replace Mr Stephen by making it clear that he wants the electorate to know exactly what his party stands for.

Mr Finnie is heading off on holiday today and will announce his candidacy from his home in Greenock before he leaves. He said yesterday he believed the Liberal Democrats had adapted to opposition better than Labour but the party was still too reactive in the way it approached its politics.

He said: "Far too many people ask the question – what are the Liberal Democrats about? We have to be talking in more modern language about what we stand for."

The party's opposition to an independence referendum is already turning into one of the main issues of this leadership campaign.

Mr Finnie said he was not completely against having a referendum on crucial issues but did not believe that a referendum on independence was necessary.

He said that there should, however, be a referendum on the findings of the Calman Commission into the powers of the parliament, because that commission was backed by a majority of the MSPs in the parliament.

Nominations for the leadership have to be submitted to party managers by noon on 24 July.

After that date, voting papers will be sent out to all Liberal Democrat members in Scotland with the result announced after the election closes at noon on 26 August.

It will be a cold day in hell before a Whig gets into Bute House; other than as a guest.

As I don't live in Scotland I'm actually a Lib Dem voter, but I have to ask my countrymen - how in the world did that glaikit wee teuchter twit ever get anywhere near the leadership of the Scottish party? Mike Rumbles seems like a decent guy, but Scott is a vacant, smirking numpty who shouldn't be in charge of a kiddies' roundabout in a park, never mind a political party.

Ross " Captain Mainwaring" Finnie for Libdem leadership ?
April Fools day or is he just having a laff?

This is the man who did more to destroy the Scottish fishing industry than probably any other person !!

Lets hope they actually take some policy positions so that there is actually a choice.

Personally I was getting pretty tired of all the sniping at the SNP - it is time - to be more positive and offer an alternative vision.

Of course the SNP have spun away on student debt, first time buyers etc - but the irony is that none of the oppossition parties were in favour of these crazy policies anyway. And probably not many SNP supporters either.

Come on LibDems get your act together.

Mike Rumbles seems only candidate mentioned that could turn round the sinking ship that is the lib dems. The lib dems have lost their cutting edge. Stephen moved them too into bed with labour for no good reason other than power.

Rumbles statement about having full fiscal autonomy for sp should be welcomed and should be the basis for moving forward. Having a weak scottish parliament serves no-one.

Labour were too much into having a sp designed to stop independence and not for the benefit of scotlands governance. The lib dems should fill that gap with clear powers that should be moved to the scottish parliament so that it can freely address scotlands problems and issues.

I rather like Finnie. He got all the dirty jobs under McConnell (fot & mouth, fishing) & did them as well as possible under that government. He is also 1 of only 2 politicians who said the Thatcher government's shodowing of the EMU was unsustainable (the other being Thatcher)

The fact that he said anybody who doesn't believe we are currrently experiencing catastrophic warming is "from Mars" (possibly directed personally at me) doesn't detract from his competence enough to reduce him below other LibDims.

Yes, I liked that one, too!! Especially since Mars is apparently suffering from global warming as well!
Personally I don't think it matters who leads the Lib-Dems though the way Labour is going (gurgle, gurgle) it's going to be either them or the Tories if you're looking for a credible Opposition Party.
Come to think of it, it's probably already them or the Tories if you want a credible opposition.

Mr Scott the man who - with a straight face and I assume, stone cold sober. Tried to charge you to use something you had already paid for.

Some policy of liberating the individual THAT..............

Also Mr Scott was very loud and very very forth-coming about not making any deals with the Scot Nat after the last election. Now that is his right (and he maybe right) but...........

While in office Mr Scott now claims to have advanced plans to dual the A9 to Pitlochry. Yet Mr Scott said nothing in public....

Why the out-spoken behaviour on one and the silence of the lambs on the other..........

Speak up Mr Scott ...
